Following the success of “Raja Rani”, Atlee went on to direct the emotional-action thriller “Theri” (2016), produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu. The film, starring Thalapathy Vijay sir, Samantha, and Amy Jackson in the lead roles, was released worldwide and received positive reviews from critics, who praised the performances, soundtrack, and overall making of the film. Atlee's next two films, “Mersal” (2017) and “Bigil” (2019), also featured Thalapathy Vijay, marking their third blockbuster collaboration as an actor-director duo. Both films achieved commercial success and were critically acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. Known for his larger-than-life narratives, he skillfully weaves engaging plots, intense action sequences, and emotional depth to create memorable cinematic experiences. Atlee's films often tackle socially relevant themes and carry impactful messages, resonating with audiences of all ages.

In 2017, Atlee went on to direct Mersal, an action film, produced by Thenandal Studio Ltd. starring Thalapathy Vijay, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Nithya Menen while S. J. Surya, Sathyaraj, Vadivelu, Hareesh Peradi, Kajal Aggarwal, and Kovai Sarala appear in pivotal supporting roles. The film was a commercial success becoming one of the highest-grossing films in Tamil cinema.

He also ventured into producing films. In 2017, Atlee along with his wife Priya Atlee, started their own production house called " A for Apple Production " and produced their debut movie "Sangili Bungili Kadhava Thora'. In 2020, they produced yet another film Andhaghaaram, a supernatural horror film.

With his keen eye for detail and ability to extract powerful performances from his actors, Atlee has established himself as a sought-after director. He’s all set to mark his debut production in Bollywood with “Baby John”, a thrilling remake of his iconic hit Theri, Starring Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh and Jackie Shroff. The movie is all set to release on December 25, 2024.
